Playnow casino hacked, player data breached
July 25, 2010 No CommentsLast week the new site for playnow.com was shut down shortly after launching due to a security breach where 134 players had their personal data compromised. The casino was launched the by bclc (British Columbia Lottery Corporation) and appears to not have done any testing on their games. Had they used a reputable software provider like Microgaming, Playtech, Real Time Gaming, Vegas Technology or Rival, maybe this issue wouldn’t have happened.
Users who visit the site are greeted with a message saying the casino is having technical difficulties and are working to fix them. It is not known if the security breach will result in lawsuits and/or fines to bclc. Some players were able to see information of other players which they should never have access to. The company initially stated the site was taken down due to server upgrades resulting from being overloaded with requests of players visiting the site. It was later determined that it was taken down due to the security breach with bclc trying to cover up their previous statements.
CEO Michael Graydon claims the company were honest and transparent with their responses but it seems all employees are refusing to comment further about the security of the website itself. If the company didn’t notice the security breach then clearly this demonstrates incompetence of the management and IT team behind the site.
It is unknown if an investigation will take place into the company to determine if the management knew about the breaches but told media that the site was down due to demand and not a security breach.
